Creepy Creatures of Franklin Canyon-Halloween Event @ Sooky Goldman Nature Center-Franklin Canyon

Join us at Franklin Canyon for a spooky fun time! We’ll learn about some of the not so creepy inhabitants of Franklin Canyon, and finish with crafts and coloring!
Wear your favorite hike-friendly costume-no masks please.
Children must bring a grown up with them.
Please RSVP via email-we will cap this event at 25 children.

Join a Franklin Canyon Docent for a nature-themed Story Time followed by a Guided Nature Walk around the lake at Franklin Canyon.
Recommended ages are 4-10, all children must be accompanied by an adult.
Meets inside the Sooky Goldman Nature Center.
Wear closed toe shoes and bring water.

This family-friendly Halloween event will host multiple fun filled activities about the night time creatures in our local parks. Activities will include spooky but fun Ranger led Bat and Scorpion hikes, Puma and Owl activities, telescope stargazing, and a Tarantula Zoo.

Park in the Main Parking Lot which is located at the intersection of Via Goleta and Potrero Rd. Additional parking is located at the Wendy trail-head and free shuttle service is provided from the Wendy trail-head to the Main Parking Lot.

Wear sturdy shoes, layers for changing weather conditions, and flashlights. Halloween costumes are encouraged!

Bring your binoculars, bird guide, and/or camera and join us for an easy bird walk around the grounds of King Gillette Ranch. This area attracts many songbirds, water birds, woodpeckers, and raptors and we are always treated to something interesting. Kids are welcome and the walk is less than a mile at a very easy pace as we stop often to observe the birds.

 

We leave promptly at 8:30 from the flagpole. Heavy rain cancels (but I will be there for anyone who wants to walk in it!). See you there!

Introduction to Mountain Bike Skills @ Malibu Creek State Park

This class takes place every first Saturday of the month including holidays, rain the day of cancels. Learn basic mountain biking skills from professional mountain bike coach Mark Langton (mountainbikeskills.com). Skills covered are proper posture (body position) for balance, cornering, climbing, descending, and braking. This is a coaching clinic with repetition and evaluation at various skills stations, with a short trail ride at the end of class. Please arrive no later than 8:45am for check-in and to sign waiver, and bicycle safety check. Class begins promptly at 9am. Mountain bikes strongly encouraged. Children over 10 years old welcome, off-road multi-speed bicycle with hand brakes recommended, BMX bikes OK. Helmets mandatory for participants under 18 (minor). Minors must be accompanied by parent/guardian at start of class and parent/guardian must sign waiver for minor.

Considered the recreational crown jewel of the Santa Monica Mountains, Malibu Creek State Park has over 8,000 acres of rolling tall grass plains, oak savannahs and dramatic peaks. It’s no wonder many call it “The Yosemite of Southern California.” Seasoned birders and beginners alike will enjoy good bird watching and a beautiful, easy hike.

Meet at the second (lower) day-use parking lot. Entrance to the park is on the west side of Las Virgenes Rd., just south of Mulholland Hwy. Entrance fee is $12 per car.
