Full Moon Poetry Workshop @ Peter Strauss Ranch

Join artist Ben Allanoff at his “Perch” installation of woven reeds for a full moon evening of reading and writing renku. No experience or ability required or expected.

This is a creative activity to do with others in the moonlight on a beautiful summer evening. Renku is a Japanese form of poetry that dates all the way back to the 1300s. It is poetry written by a group in one session. One person writes a few lines inspired by the setting, or the season, the moon or whatever. Then, each participant adds a few lines of their own, allowing the theme to evolve, resuting in one long, collectively written poem to mark the occasion.

Bring a chair or blanket to sit on, pencil and paper.

Tiny Porch Concerts: The Lowest Pair w/ Roses & Cigarettes @ Peter Strauss Ranch | Agoura Hills | California | United States

The Lowest Pair. Fans already know that the chemistry between Palmer’s Midwestern charm, those long winters spent listening to a steady diet of Townes Van Zandt and John Hartford, and Kendl’s poetic and playful way with words, her unique approach to the banjo, and her barefoot-in- the-cool-river-water mystique combine to make a powerful sound, but what’s new in 2016 is both the inclusion of those non-banjo sounds (harmonica, drum, bass, violin) and an incredible expansion of their songbook. In a way, two records, the playful and the hush, the dark and the rooted, the pillow and the nightmare, the pin drop and the starry night; the juxtaposition of the ups and downs that are experiences in a day, in a year, in a minute, all this has demanded from the band more than just “a new record.” Fern Girl and Ice Man and Uncertain As It Is Uneven mark the arrival of America’s next great musical duo, and it’s over the course of these two albums that that boast becomes clearly rooted in truth.

Roses & Cigarettes formed in Los Angeles in 2013 when the country cover band that Jenny Pagliaro was singing in auditioned Angela Petrilli for a vacant guitar position. Pagliaro and Petrilli immediately bonded over their desire to perform original material and similar tastes in music – from the classics like Fleetwood Mac, the Eagles and Bonnie Raitt; to more contemporary artists like Patty Griffin, Sheryl Crow and Miranda Lambert. It was a mutual love of singer-songwriter Ray LaMontagne and his song Roses and Cigarettes that inspired the name of the band.

Tiny Porch Concerts: David Luning w/ Bearcoon @ Peter Strauss Ranch

David Luning. John Prine forced David Luning to drop out of college. Not at gunpoint or anything—the two had never even met—but the effect of hearing the songwriting legend’s music for the first time had an equally compelling effect on Luning, who was studying film scoring at the Berklee College of Music in Boston at the time. Now an accomplished artist in his own right, Luning is preparing to release his most dynamic and gripping collection to date, ‘Restless,’ and he can trace it all back to one fateful night that changed everything. “A couple of friends invited me over to share some songs at their apartment, and that was the first time I’d ever really listened to Americana music or folk or country or whatever you want to call it,” remembers Luning. “They showed me John Prine, and it just resonated with me so much. I was like, ‘Oh my god, this is what I have to do with my life.’ I just figured it out in that moment.” Luning dropped out of school almost immediately, moved back to his native California, and devoted himself to songwriting and performing.

Bearcoon. After taking home the grand prize win at Buskerfest (Long Beach’s largest and longest-running battle-of-the-bands competition) and being named “Best Folk Act” by the OC Weekly, the on-stage bandmates and off-stage girlfriends of Bearcoon made a bold decision: to sell 95% of their possessions, quit their jobs, give up their apartment, and begin touring the country full-time. Following their sold-out album release show at Fingerprints Music in June 2015, the pair left town in a 1992 Chevy G20 conversion van they’d purchased off of Craigslist a few weeks earlier. Following its release their album, El Guapo, quickly reached the #1 spot on amazon.com’s “Hot New Releases” list and would go on to be voted “Long Beach Album of the Year” on the Long Beach Post’s public opinion poll.  The duo spent 2016 touring the west coast and making appearances at several noteworthy festivals including the Joshua Tree Music Festival.
