Join a ranger talk about the protection and survival of the park’s last large mammal carnivores. Learn about what wildlife biologists are discovering from a 17-year study and explore the puma’s unique challenges in the nation’s largest urban park. Walk will be about 2 miles round trip. Bring sun protection, water and sturdy shoes. Meet at water fountain at Visitor Center.
Hike with Ranger Nico to say farewell to the day from Sandstone Peak, the highest point in Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area.
During this hike, you will learn how the mountains have a relationship with people and influence our choices and daily life.
This is a 3 mile (round trip) strenuous hike. There is a 1,000 foot elevation gain.
Bring water, sturdy shoes, a headlamp, and layers for cooler temperatures. The presentation will conclude at the peak and the ranger will walk back when the sun sets. Visitors are welcome to hike back to the parking lot with Ranger Nico or stay on the peak.
Please meet at the Sandstone Peak Trailhead at 5:30 p.m. There is very little cell reception in this area. Directions are posted below.

Franklin Canyon has been the chosen film location for Hollywood productions since the silent film era. Come and walk in the steps of Andy Griffith, Capt Kirk, and Clark Gable.
Meets outside the Sooky Goldman Nature Center.
Explore the Santa Monica Mountains with a ranger and earn a junior ranger badge! On a short walk, learn how to hike safely, identify plants and animals, and use your senses to explore the world around us. Free junior ranger activity books will be available.
The program is aimed for kids 5-11 but all ages are welcome to participate. Meet at 2 PM by the fountain at the King Gillette Visitor Center.
