Nature in Mind: Art Exhibit & Sale @ Anthony C. Beilenson Interagency Visitor Center

Oil Painter, Sarah Stone uses color, lines and her imagination to create fantasy-realist works featuring the plants and animals of the Santa Monica Mountains and Southern California. She creates colorful images using traditional painting and illustration techniques. Her art expresses personal stories reflected on canvas and transformed into a land of dreams.

MEET THE ARTIST: Saturday, November 2 from 1:00-3:00 pm at the Visitor Center.

Light refreshments will be served. A portion of the funds from the sales will be donated to further arts programs in the Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area

The barren and colorful Amargosa desert southeast of Death Valley is not only a geologist’s playground, but is important ecologically due to perennial water flow through Amargosa Canyon. Bill Neill will outline the area’s long and dramatic geological history that is representative of western North America, then close by describing the transition since the 1970’s from a mining economy to eco-tourism.
Bill studied geology at UCLA and Stanford University, then was employed as a petroleum engineer for 20 years, and has been active for 36 years on controlling invasive wildland weeds and exotic trees in natural areas. He has served as co-president of the LA/SMM CNPS Chapter since January, and as a director of the Amargosa Conservancy since 2014.
**Programs are free to the public, and non-members are welcome. Refreshments will be served.

Presented by Steve Hartman, CNPS Board President
Steve Hartman, CNPS Fellow, and long-time conservation advocate and board member, will entertain with a power point presentation that will cover his involvement with CNPS since he joined in 1974. Steve has been active in desert, Sierra, and local issues and has personally led weed control efforts in the Sepulveda Basin and elsewhere for decades. Steve has also spent decades on the LA Chapter board, currently serving as Treasurer and newsletter editor. His talk will also include many of the colorful CNPSers with whom Steve has collaborated over the years.
